Learning Dutch

The normal business language in the Netherlands is Dutch. In some international organisations, it is possible to operate in English with limited Dutch. However, for your assimilation into any organisation, knowledge of Dutch is highly recommended. If you can start with tapes and books before arrival, this would be an advantage. Taalthuis has a free online Dutch course and dictionary: www.taalthuis.com. Formal lessons should be a priority on your arrival.

Shell will reimburse language training costs for Dutch lessons as required for business purposes and to assist with settling into The Netherlands. If you have selected the Accompanied basis, your Recognised Partner will also be eligible.

Language training will typically  be taken upon arrival in  The Netherlands  or during the course of the assignment, but, training  may also  take place before the assignment starts. The Shell Employee and/or Recognised Partner will each be eligible for a maximum of 90 hours of training including the time before and after arrival in  the  Host Country.  Training can take the form of c lassroom instruction,  private coaching or  on-line and blended learning programmes (combination of classroom and on-line learning) .  Costs allowed include the standard textbook, workbook, and CDs chosen by the instructor for the learning method, but not dictionaries, photocopies, digital dictionaries, etc.

Some methods will be significantly more expensive on a per-hour basis than others, this should be kept in mind when choosing language instruction methods. To be reimbursed, instruction must be delivered through a recognised language instructor or institution , a list of which may be obtained from Outpost.
